Forum Making Money

i can just see bill clinton there, soon to be joined by evan bayh...and maybe even dennis kucinich, who should definitely choose wines over drinks with olives in them.

the narcissism and self-congratulatory nature of all of this...

dont these people feel guilty drinking five hundred dollar bottles of wine, when the whole world is especially, watching them?

dont they care at all, even in public, what they look like, and the messages that they give?

i think it is really heartbreaking, what happens to people that are so intoxicated and driven by money and power....and especially when these are the people who make the decisions that affect every one of us.

i just cant help but think about the contrasts in the world, when i read this.

i cant help but mention this. just before i read this article, i was thinking about a little girl in the shelter where i work, who saw a car leaving, as she looked out of the gate.

she said, "i wonder if they have a home that they are driving to..or if they have a pass to go out somewhere."

and then, i think of this drunken mess, of the rich and powerful.

for people who think, the world is a comedy.

for people who feel, the world is a tragedy.

Clough was apparently working on the recommendation of Richard Kurin, undersecretary for history, art and culture. Complaints had been lodged by two powerful Republican congressmen, neither of whom had seen the video.

Clough's rash decision blew up in the Smithsonian's face. The Assn. of Art Museum Directors released a stern rebuke. A sharp editorial in the New York Times called the removal "absurd." A Washington Post critic argued for Clough's resignation.

Two big foundations issued a public moratorium on future Smithsonian funding, while others who contributed money to the privately underwritten show are known to be furious. Art museums and galleries around the country -- and even in Europe -- lined up to present the censored video. Last week the Museum of Modern Art went even further, acquiring the work for its permanent collection.

The Town Hall event is Clough's first public appearance since the censorship took place. An e-mail from a Smithsonian spokesman said that the secretary would "touch on" the issue in his talk and meet briefly with press afterward. Both gestures suggest we shouldn't expect a full accounting of what happened in the internal decision-making process -- or why.

That's disappointing. His defense of his actions on Tuesday -- "I think I made the right decision" -- makes matters worse. What the secretary actually needs to say when he "touches on" the controversy can be simply stated: "I screwed up."

Speculation has been rife that the decision was a blundered defensive measure, taken in the immediate aftermath of midterm elections that saw conservative Republicans assume control of the House of Representatives. Small agencies such as the Corp. for Public Broadcasting forecast a fight over federal appropriations. Expect the same for the Smithsonian.

Thirty million annual visitors might love going to its 19 museums, most of them free; but anyone who thinks appeasement will prevent an assault from the right on already modest cultural budgets is naive in the extreme. And a defensive measure that alienates supportive centrist and liberal constituencies is just plain dumb.

The Smithsonian's dilemma was ginned up by a single source: the Catholic League, which New York Times columnist Frank Rich has aptly described as "a right-wing publicity mill with no official or financial connection to the Catholic Church." Wojnarowicz's video partly laments widespread official apathy early in the AIDS epidemic and uses a crucifix as a specific symbol of general Christian indifference. The Catholic League called it anti-Christian, but the symbol is in fact more correctly described as anti-Catholic League and its ilk.

Here's why: William Donohue, the $400,000-a-year head of the organization, and L. Brent Bozell III, who is on the league's advisory board, are ardent anti-gay activists. So are House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who called for the censorship. Whether or not Clough, his undersecretary Kurin or others at the Smithsonian were aware that they were tailoring historical scholarship to quiet ideological opposition is just one among many unanswered questions.

Yet, it certainly looks that way. And there is reason to believe skittishness led the secretary to act in haste.

Ben Davis, a reporter for the website Artinfo.com, unearthed a 2006 case at Georgia Tech, where Clough was president just prior to taking the Smithsonian post. Clough and the school were sued by a conservative Christian legal association over a gay rights issue.

Among the claimed offenses: By mandating a hospitable environment on campus for lesbian and gay students, Davis wrote, Georgia Tech policy came under fire because it "discriminated against religions promoting anti-gay views and favored religions that preached tolerance." Donohue and Bozell were making a similar complaint about the Smithsonian's hospitable environment.

At the school, Clough reached a settlement with the plaintiffs. Perhaps he thought that's what he was also doing when the National Portrait Gallery was being bullied.

If so, he is mistaken. Clough erred by choosing censorship, throwing gasoline onto a brush fire.

Backing down to bullies never works. What works is reporting bullies to the authorities -- in this case, the authorities being the American public. There are diplomatic ways to do that, but the secretary didn't even try. Apparently, he won't be trying at Town Hall, either.

Now, almost two months later, the secretary is weakly defending his administrative error. The agenda for the Smithsonian Board of Regents' Jan. 31 meeting includes the censorship fiasco, but much of it will take place behind closed doors in executive session. If Clough thinks he made the right call, then he's merely digging a deeper hole.

Guarding Your Company's online reputation

When firms or people today fall prey to unfair rivals, irate ex-employees or disgruntled shoppers, then a SERM turns into essential while in the economic survival of a home business.

Firms like SERMs are crucial in keeping, and in some instances salvaging and restoring suppliers or person's reputation and wonderful title.

Web based searches are a single in the very first elements that present day day consumes do prior to investing money with a small business or person, and one particular bad click can suggest financial disaster to get a home business, particularly in this ever growing cyber economy. Popularity for these SERMs are boosting by leaps and bounds with the realization it isn't prudent to attempt to conduct online business in this cyber age and never have a SERM on retainer along with your accountant along with your lawyer.

Businesses are also appreciating the collateral benefit of acquiring a Status Management agency on-board as an integral part of their organization model, its terrific marketing! Although securing a company's high-quality status and title via the internet, it generates great press and beneficial publicity that finally adds drastically to your bottom line of the company's balance sheet, making the companies to actually shell out for itself in many conditions.

This tends to become an incredibly powerful marketing level for companies also as individuals, to understand that they are cleansing and defending their reputations and cyber images, although at the same time running a very useful marketing initiative. In some cases vendors completely disregard their former marketing efforts on the net and opt for the advantages of Online Popularity Management.

Ways of Making Money

Everyone wants to know the secrets of the YouTube stars—how did they make successful careers out of YouTube, how do they make money and what advice do they have for hopefuls looking to follow in their footsteps?  Tubefilter’s ‘Secrets if YouTube Superstars’ panel at CES shed some light on these questions. Tubefilter’s editor and co-founder, Marc Hustvedt, moderated the panel, which was made up of YouTube megastars iJustine, Joe Penna (aka MysteryGuitarMan), Phil DeFranco, Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch.

You can watch the full thirty-seven minute panel in the video below, but I’d like to take a little time to recap some of the most interesting points that were brought up.  I think that Hustvedt asked great questions, leading the panelists to shed some very interesting light on the world of YouTube as a business.

Putting In The Work

I think that the most important thing that can be gleaned from the ‘Secrets Of The YouTube Stars’ CES panel is that you can’t go anywhere on YouTube without putting in lots and lots and lots of work.  There was a general consensus that these guys work an average of about 80 hours a week.  That’s an average of about 11.5 hours a day with no weekend!  And these guys have already made their YouTube channels a success, so just imagine how much work goes in to making a name for yourself when you’re starting out at the bottom.

iJustine says, “This is our life.  Every second of the day you’re working, essentially.  If you’re not posting videos you’re still tweeting, your updating Facebook or you’re updating all these social networks to tie back to your videos and keep people updated on what you’re doing.”  YouTube stars never sleep—it’s a 24/7 job.  Brandon Laatsch says, “We’ve pulled more all nighters in the last year than we did all throughout college.”  But what’s important to note is that these guys love their job.  If you have the passion and the drive, and you’re willing to put in the hours it can be incredibly rewarding.

Bringing Home The Bacon

The question on everyone’s mind is, how do YouTube stars make money?  The panelists are all paying the bills with money they make from YouTube videos, but how do they do it?

Joe Penna explains the two major ways that YouTube stars make money, in addition to the revenue that they earn through YouTube advertising.  One of these ways is through working with brands.  The other is through merchandising.

Penna, iJustine and DeFranco all have quite a lot of experience working with brands.  They seem to agree that working with brands is fantastic, as brands trust them to take creative control and allow them the budget to make bigger, better videos than they could otherwise.  Laatsch also pointed out that over the last year or so viewers have become a lot more accepting of brand deals.  At first there was a lot of name calling (i.e. “You’re a sell out!”), but now that viewers understand that this is what these guys are doing for a living they get that branding is a good thing as it enables them to make better videos.  All the YouTubers stressed that they incorporated branding into their videos in an unobtrusive way as to not freak their viewers out.

YouTube also helps with revenue through grant programs.  They helped DeFranco branch his single channel out into the six-channel DeFranco Inc. and they also sponsored Freddie and Brandon in a project in which they drove around in an RV for a month, making videos with their fans.

Personality

The most important thing that I think can be gleaned from this panel for wannabe YouTube stars is the importance of personality.  If you take a look at the top YouTube channels nearly all of them are supported by a personality.  MysteryGuitarMan makes music videos, but he’s sure to speak directly to his viewers in each and every one of his videos as well.  If you have a strong personality your viewers feel like they know you personally and this is one of the biggest keys to YouTube success.

DeFranco says that YouTube stars are different from television or movie stars because you may want to catch a glimpse of a television star but you’d like to sit and chat over a beer with a YouTube star.  You feel like you are friends with them, they influence you and they can’t wait for you to put out another video.

I’d also like to point out that this is fantastic for branding.  Brands can tap into an audience of millions when they turn to YouTube stars for promotional purposes and these millions trust these stars and are completely engaged and influenced by them.  This is much more direct and effective advertising that television advertising, and cheaper.  It’s a lot more bang for your buck!

So Christmas has been and gone. Are you now facing the New Year and wondering how you can keep up the Christmas spirit and goodwill for the coming year? Well, it certainly helps when you know how to do so for free from your own home.

There are so many simple ways to volunteer or donate to charity by giving up a small amount of your time or re-purposing some money you would normally have spent. So here’s a list of five of the best quick and easy ways to volunteer or donate to charity. Bookmark the list of charities and use it to do the rounds weekly!

id="more-61896">

Skip1.org

This is a great concept — it’s a site which makes you think about how much money you waste on frivolous things. You nominate something which you will give up, say a lunch or newspapers for a month. Then you donate that same amount of money to feeding a hungry child.

Yes, you’re handing over money to charity, but it’s money you would have spent anyway. It’s also easy to share news of your donation with your friends via social networks, and hopefully convince a few of them to skip something for charity too.

style="text-align: center;">

Free Rice

Free Rice has been around a while, but it’s so good it’s worth making sure it’s on this list. Play a simple, addictive trivia quiz and Free Rice will donate rice for each of your correct answers. This is a free and simple way to give whenever you have a free moment. Read more on FreeRice here.

style="text-align: center;">

Causes

There are a number of things you can do using Causes, including raising awareness for your chosen charity and helping to raise funds for them. By far the easiest way to donate money with Causes is to set up a birthday or holiday fund. This way, instead of receiving presents from friends and family, you simply ask them to donate the money on your behalf. It takes about two minutes to set up, since you can log in with Facebook Connect – just choose the charity and you’re set!

style="text-align: center;">

Charity Gifts

Here’s another easy way to spend your money on charity instead of something you were already going to pay for. Instead of giving gifts to your friends, give them the knowledge that you have donated to charity on their behalf. The Donation4Charity website searches all the big charity gifting sites (such as UNICEF, WWF and Oxfam) and lets you search the gifts according to how much money you have available to spend. Buy a goat for charity for about the same price as a modest gift!

style="text-align: center;">

Sparked

Spend 5-10 minutes donating your expertise to charity: Give website feedback, brainstorm fundraising ideas or help design an awareness campaign. This is what they need help with – if you can spend a few minutes working on it then you’ve made a difference to a real charity with just a moment of your time. Read more on Sparked here & get going!

Making Money on Line

Fragmentation. Curation. Recommendations. Take your pick: Android is getting all three, compliments of a new Amazon-run application marketplace due to launch later this year.  Today, Amazon has launched the developer-facing part of the store, inviting devs to submit their applications so that they’re ready when the app store is ready for its consumer debut later this year (Amazon isn’t giving a firm date on the full launch). The developer portal is at http://developer.amazon.com.

We reported on this impending news back in September, so it isn’t a huge surprise. But it’s going to bring some very interesting dynamics to the way Android applications are purchased and distributed. In some senses, this is the Android equivalent of Apple’s App Store — even more so than Google’s official Android Market.

I spoke with Aaron Rubenson, category leader for Amazon Mobile Services, and

Ameesh Paleja, general manager for the Engineering Division of Mobile Services, about the new store, and it clearly has the potential to be a big deal.

First, some background for those who don’t follow Android too closely. All Google-endorsed Android devices ship with the Android Market, along with a suite of other Google-made applications like Gmail. Android Market is a lot like Apple’s App Store with a few key differences: it doesn’t have an approval system, so developers can quickly submit and iterate on their applications. It also tends to have a lot of junky applications that Apple would reject — things that crash on launch on certain devices, or apps with that occasionally have features that don’t work as expected. While Google’s terms do require descriptions to be accurate, the general attitude is to let the market decide what works, and it surfaces the top rated applications (most of the time) while letting the junk sink.

Amazon is taking an approach that is more in line with Apple’s. Developers who wish to appear on Amazon’s store have to get approval (Amazon says that the process is currently taking about a week). And Amazon is going to have slightly more stringent guidelines: your application has to work properly (i.e. it can’t crash right off the bat) and it has to do what you say it does. It also has to be safe. Android Market has many of these same requirements, but the difference here is that Amazon checks apps before they’re deployed to its store, while Google does so after problematic applications are reported.

However, unlike Apple’s screening policies (which were largely a mystery for years and are still pretty wishy-washy), Amazon says it’s going to take a more liberal stance as far as what’s allowed on the store. Porn and illegal apps are not allowed, but your satire apps should be okay. And developers won’t have to make any changes to their .apk files, either — it sounds like you can upload the same ones to both Google’s and Amazon’s marketplaces (neither has any exclusivity requirements).

The biggest departure from the mobile app stores we’ve grown accustomed to involves pricing. Unlike Apple’s App Store and Android Market, where developers can set their price to whatever they’d like, Amazon retains full control over how it wants to price your application. The setup is a bit confusing: upon submitting your application, you can set a ‘List Price’, which is the price you’d normally sell it at. Amazon will use a variety of market factors to determine what price it wants to use, and you get a 70% cut of the proceeds of each sale (which is the industry standard). In the event that Amazon steeply discounts your application, or offers it for free, you’re guaranteed to get 20% of the List Price.

The bottom line here is that Amazon will be offering discounts on some applications (possibly making them much cheaper than the same application on Android Market or elsewhere). That sounds like it could be a recipe for frustration for some developers, but Rubenson and Paleja say that they’re going to do everything they can to maximize the amount of money developers make, and that sometimes that involves adjusting pricing. They also say that Amazon has an incentive to keep developers happy — and that developers can remove their apps from the store with ten day’s notice. We’ll have to wait and see if the system works.

So why, aside from these pricing differences, would consumers want to use this Amazon App Store at all? There are a few answers to that question.

The first is that there are manufacturers making Android devices that decide not to partner with Google to offer the official suite of Google applications (including Android Market). Amazon is happy to offer their store to these manufacturers, and it will work on any Android device version 1.6 or up. So if, for example, Facebook releases its own flavor of Android down the line, they could include Amazon’s App Store.

Reason number two: Amazon says that it can offer recommendations using the technology that already exists on Amazon.com. This includes the obvious example of showing applications that are similar to each other, but Amazon will also be looking for correlations between physical products and apps — it might start recommending a popular baseball app to someone browsing for a baseball bat, for example. And it’s going to be promoting these applications as users browse Amazon.com.

Amazon says it’s premature to talk about what the store itself will look like, but they did share a few details about the consumer experience. First, payments unsurprisingly will be done using Amazon’s one-click payment system (which already has tens of millions of credit cards on file), though developers can integrate whatever transaction system they want into the app itself.

Customers will be able to browse through applications from their phone or on Amazon.com using their desktop computers, and they’ll be able to ‘send’ applications they buy to their mobile device. This sounds similar to what Google showed off at Google I/O, but with one minor caveat: the apps won’t actually be pushed and installed immediately, it sounds like you’ll have to fire up the Amazon application to do that.

So how will people actually get access to this Amazon marketplace from their Android device? This is going to prove a bit tricky for some users — Amazon will offer a walkthrough instructing users on how to do this, but it will require you dig into the settings menu on the device and allow installation from “Unknown Sources”. It’s easy to find if you know what you’re doing, but it sounds a bit scary. However, Amazon is also in talks with various partners, and we’ll likely be seeing plenty of applications shipping with the market pre-installed.

Now, Amazon isn’t the only company that’s making alternative Android App Stores — Verizon is also doing one of its own, and there will surely be more to follow. But Amazon is in a position to establish itself as the de facto non-Google App Store — and that could prove to be very important. As Kevin Marks wrote recently (and we discussed further), Android is going to increasingly fragment into flavors that aren’t as closely tied to Google, and we’ll start seeing more alternative versions of the core ‘Google Apps’. Amazon’s App Store would fit in nicely as one part of this alternative suite.

This will also bring pricing battles over the same applications into the equation (which hasn’t really been possible when app distribution is monopolized by a single storefront). And, yes, it could lead to some user confusion, though Amazon has a strong incentive to keep this as straightforward as it can.

Make no mistake — this isn’t going to replace Google’s Android Market by any means. Google’s store will have better international support for some time (Amazon is US-only at launch) and it will still be shipping on plenty of phones by default. But given how many Android devices are going to be out there in the near future (they’re activating over 300,000 a day), there’s certainly going to be enough customers to keep more than one store in business.

I asked a few times about timing for the consumer launch but couldn’t get anything more specific than “this year”. However, the team did say that the mobile storefront is being built with tablets in mind, so my guess is that we can expect this to launch after Android tablets running Honeycomb are on the market (which will probably be around April or later).

I asked the Amazon team how Google felt about the launch — there was an audible chuckle, and they said something about Android being on an amazing growth trajectory and that they were fond of its openness.

Reached for comment, Google gave this statement:

Android is an open platform – and entities other than Google are free to create their own content and marketplaces, much like the web.

I bet they’re thrilled.

The Phoenix Suns will look to snap out of their recent funk when they host the New York Knicks tonight. It will be the first game for Amar'e Stoudemire against his former team, as he decided to not re-sign with the Suns to become the go-to guy in New York.

So far it looks as though the decision has worked out well for Stoudemire and the Knicks, as they improved to 20-14 with their recent 128-115 win over the San Antonio Spurs. As for the Suns, they have lost six of their last seven games, with the last being a 99-95 loss at home against the Lakers. Our NBA spreads have the Suns favored by 2.5 points over the Knicks with the total sitting at 219.5.

The Knicks come in off their most impressive win of the season, as they really took it to the Spurs at home. Wilson Chandler led the way with 31 points, while Stoudemire and Raymond Felton each had 28 points.

Stoudemire is putting up monster numbers as a Knick this season, averaging 26.4 points and nine rebounds a game, but also making a difference defensively. Over the last five games he is averaging 3.4 blocks, making it very difficult for guys to score down low.

No question Stoudemire is going to come out with a ton of energy in this game, as you know he wants nothing more than to go into Phoenix and beat the team that didn't want to pony up and give him the contract he deserved.

The key for the Suns is simple: find a way to slow Stoudemire down. I don't know if the Suns have anyone capable of shutting him down. That means the Suns are going to have to keep up with the Knicks and try and outscore them.

New York doesn't bring much of a threat defensively as they rank behind the Suns, allowing 106.5 points a game, so look for Phoenix to have a much better showing offensively in this one. The Suns haven't scored 100 points in their last three games, and if they don't get to that mark tonight, they don't have a chance against the Knicks.

I think you have to take the Knicks to go into Phoenix and win this game. Stoudemire is going to make sure New York comes to play in this one, and I just don't think the Suns have enough offensively right now to keep up with New York. I kinda like the Knicks on the money line in this one, but if you want to be safe, take the 2.5 points.

How to Making Money

Since the textbook definition of "fiat money" is often quoted as being in direct contrast to physical commodities (gold, copper, oil...), the issue is what do I mean by "effectively". It was an attempt, which judging by the responses unsuccessful, to highlight that many of the reasons for viewing "gold" as being a superior repository of value are tied to its being a  "superior fiat currency". In the end, value of "gold" is dependent, much like a "fiat currency" on confidence of the commodity or currency holders. The value of any single "fiat currency" can drop dramatically (as it happens with some regularity), as one's trust in the issuing entity declines. Similar drop has been observed for gold (e.g. 1980-1999). In the modern, global, electronic society, the value of gold is determined by its convertibility into a fiat currency (or some equivalent global note-issuing organization), rather than a direct medium of exchange. Thus, there has to be a consensus (market-driven) exchange value for gold into a particular currency. However, if that is the "true" value of gold, than it is no different from a system of floating currencies, with gold being one of the currencies. Let me try to illustrate this by example. Lets assume that the current crisis leads to formation of a global government agency that will print universally accepted currency notes, with initial supply of notes roughly equal to 10% of global money stock. It will also print new notes at a rate of that can never exceed 0.3% to 1.0% of existing stock. This new "fiat currency" (intrinsically worthless and reliant on gov't agency for credibility) could be used in any country via conversion into local currency and would have a function that is largely equivalent to gold. Its value in any given currency would rise or drop depending on investors confidence.

I suspect that you take issue with use of "gold as a fiat currency" in part due to fact that gold supply is not controlled by any single government and has an intrinsically low rate of growth. Thus, is not government edict, collective wisdom that drives valuation. My use of the word "effectively" is an attempt to point out that in practical terms you still need to convert gold into some exchange medium to realize its value and that exchange medium will mostly likely be a fiat currency.

All the best, Vadim

Khloe Kardashian: Is She Making A Play As the No. 1 Kardashian?

As Lamar Odom and his wife, Khloe Kardashian, get set to begin filming their reality show, Khloe & Lamar, one cannot help but realize how much screen time Khloe has.

With her third E! show on tap, and a publicized marriage with a World Champion basketball star in Lamar, is Khloe becoming the No.1 Kardashian the right way?

Whether you know her or not, you have all heard of sister Kim, for one reason or another, but sister Khloe seems to be giving her a run for her money nowadays.

Kim was romantically linked to Saints Super Bowl Champion Reggie Bush, but unfortunately, things did not work out.

While Kim is now reportedly linked to Kris Humphries of the New Jersey Nets, he holds nothing on Lamar.

The Kardashians continue to creep onto your television screen and it seems it will not stop.

With Khloe & Lamar due out around the NBA Playoffs, Khloe may take the reins as the top Kardashian with the help of the Lakers' forward.

I have to agree that in the past, Opera’s promotional efforts have been shady. However, in the recent past they have been doing really well. They have had a few viral successes, especially on Reddit (I covered that over here, earlier).
But, promotion is just one of the many reasons behind Opera’s failure. I had articulated my views in this Quora discussion thread. I am quoting what I previously wrote below:

In my opinion, here are the significant factors

i) Remained ad-supported for too long: It is the security scares in Internet Explorer that helped kickstart the Firefox revolution. Back then while people were looking for alternate browsers, Opera was not free. Hence, while the Fx movement caught on, Opera languished.
ii) Opera is different: I believe that Opera’s UI is the best – elegant, simple yet powerful. However, new users might find it too complicated.
iii) Rendering issues: Opera can’t render many websites properly. I am not saying that this is solely Opera’s fault. I am very much aware of the browser sniffing issues. However, to the end user this is a big turnoff.
iv) Lack of extensions: Opera has just added extensions. I believe that this has had a significant effect on adoption.
Yes, most average users don’t use extensions. However, power users do. And these power users are often journalists, bloggers or simply the techie friend everyone listens to. Thus, Opera never really stood a chance of convincing the opinion makers.
Firefox on the other hand impressed these elite users. They in turn reccomended it to their friends and family members and helped spread the word.
v) Lack of promotion: Already discussed in-depth. Google has been spending millions to promote Chrome. This is simply not possible for Opera.

Even the EU Ballot screen failed to help Opera. Yes, it increased the download counts and increased the no. of active users in Q1 2010. However, the no. of users decreased in Q2 and Q3. In the end Opera’s % market share in EU remains largely unchanged.

So, don’t tell me you don’t make money!

It’s true. Opera is a publicly traded company, so all their finances are in the public domain. They suffered losses a few quarters back, and now are again in the black. But, their profits aren’t huge. Remember that they have 700 employees and numerous offices. Mozilla, by comparison has only about 350 employees. So, Opera can’t afford to spend millions on an advertising campaign like Microsoft or Google. Google has been doing print ads and putting up hording in India. That is something not feasible for Opera.

A few years back, there were loads of Firefox ads on the web. However, a majority of them were actually Adsense referral unit, where Google was paying webmasters. But, Asa from Mozilla revealed in the aforementioned Quora discussion, Google’s drive didn’t really bring in that many Firefox users. Spreadfirefox.com was way more successful. That suggests that what Opera really missed out on was the word of mouth. And the reasons behind that are probably things like extensions and website compatibility.
Firefox had loads of opinion makers (vocal advocates) behind it. Opera only had a handful number of dedicated fans.

Tl;dr: Bad promotion may be one of the contributing factors, but I don’t believe that it is the main reason behind Opera’s poor marketshare.

Social media is everywhere, and it is finally accepted as much as, well, as much as the class='blippr-nobr'>Internetclass="blippr-nobr">Internet itself. Sadly, though, in reaching this level of ubiquity, we have ended up surrendering the real promise of this medium.

I fought for so many years to convince people that the Net was a social medium in the first place. Until recently, everybody seemed to believe that “content is king,” and that all this messy socializing between people was of little value. It was all about getting people onto a sticky website so they’d make purchases. Their conversations and innermost thoughts were once considered utterly un-monetizable.

But thanks to Twitterclass="blippr-nobr">Twitter, YouTubeclass="blippr-nobr">YouTube and Facebookclass="blippr-nobr">Facebook, social media has arrived as a justifiable expense for businesses looking to do whatever it is that’s intended to replace advertising. And as a result, people who should know better -– many of us who have some understanding of how social media actually works –- are busy working for companies who want to turn this social landscape back into a marketplace.

This isn’t about pointing fingers or laying blame. It’s about stopping ourselves before it is too late. We still have a chance for social media to generate the biggest change in how culture and commerce operate since the invention of the printing press. But it will require that we recognize what is so special about it, how it disrupts the status quo, and why it’d be such a shame to give all this up without a fight.

A Historic Opportunity

The most disruptive feature of social media is that it allows us to connect with one another relatively directly. (Even Facebook’s architecture of central servers is completely unnecessary for social networking to occur, as new tools like Diaspora are quickly demonstrating.) The direct connection via media –- for socializing, or even for commerce — has been controlled by both governments and businesses for the past 600 years. That’s right: This is our best opportunity in six centuries to connect with our peers via technology without the oversight of powerful interests.

After the fall of the Roman Republic, Europeans spent close to a thousand years living under the awful oppression of feudalism. There were lords who owned all the land and peasants who worked on it.

Nothing much happened until merchants started traveling around and spreading the innovations from one area to another. People became good at particular crafts and started selling things to one another, developing little marketplaces that slowly grew in size. Towns developed their own currencies based on grain and other commodities, and people started to get rich.

They had liberated themselves from absolute dependence on the landowners and created a peer-to-peer economy. They got healthy, bigger than at any time in history until the 1980s, and they worked less than four days a week. As a result of the rise of this new “bourgeoisie,” the lords had less power and money. They decided to crash this new economy.

Local moneys were declared illegal; people had to borrow “coin of the realm” from the central treasury. And if that wasn’t enough, local business was also stifled. Instead of working for themselves, people had to become “employees” of one of the king’s officially sanctioned monopolies — what we would today consider “corporations.” People got poor, conditions got worse, the plague broke out … you know the rest. We call it the Renaissance, but it was really the end of a peer-to-peer culture and economy that has never been matched. Until now.

The Potential for True Peer-to-Peer Culture

With the web — and more specifically, with social media — we have the chance to engage with one another in the ways that could restore a P2P society in which people create and exchange value directly with one another. Instead of depending on corporations for jobs, goods, and even investment, we can work for and with one another. Instead of relating indirectly through centrally constructed mythologies and brands (you’re a fan of Nike, too?!) we can relate directly with one another.

The real possibilities of social media, however, are quickly devolving to the limited applications of social marketing. In the past 20 years, I watched open source get reduced to the corporate-friendly concept of “crowd sourcing,” and my own concept of “viral media” get watered down to “viral marketing.” I refuse to watch the social promise of interactive media get redefined by those hoping to make a fast buck off our Facebook friendships. Not without a fight.

Instead of connecting to one another, we are increasingly connected to and friended by the same old brands and institutions that the Internet once stood a chance of upending. And worst of all, we the people are getting into the act, learning to sell our friends to the highest bidder. Whether it’s a Zynga game inviting us to turn over our address books for points, or an advertiser offering us a chance to win a prize for “friending” them publicly, we are now in the business of marketing our friendships to those who hope to exploit the bonds we have created with others. In doing so, we reduce the real value of those bonds, as well as the entire potential for peer-to-peer connection.

Conclusion

The real opportunity of social networking looks a lot more like Burning Man and WikiLeaksclass="blippr-nobr">Wikileaks than it does like P&G’s word-of-mouth campaign or whatever Twitter is hatching in its new analytics lab.

We are building the social organism together. That’s all the Internet has been doing from the beginning. But it seems as soon as we develop a new tool or strand of connectivity, it is hijacked by business, robbed of its power, and then replaced by mechanisms that connect us to things, rather than people.

Will social networking finally accomplish the Internet’s real goal? We have yet to see. But in the meantime, how we use it — and what we think it to be — will go a long way toward determining its fate.
